How mobile-friendly is your website?

If you own a smart phone, take a moment and check. Go ahead. I'll wait.
Are you happy with what you see on your smart phone. Can you even read the content on your website without having to zoom in? Does it condense to fit the screen or do you need to scroll not only up and down but left and right as well?

While you may not think viewing your website via your mobile phone is important, your customers think otherwise. In the 4th quarter of 2011 alone about 12.6% of website traffic was generated via mobile devices. Up from the 6.3% recorded a year earlier, according to the Walker Sands Quarterly Web Traffic Report.

The devices that make up the largest percentage of mobile traffic?

  • iPhone
  • Android
  • iPad
  • BlackBerry

Take a look at the stats below if you aren't willing to take my word for it.

As you can see, mobile traffic to your website is on the rise. Are potential customers able to quickly get the information they need from you when they land on your website via a mobile device or are they quickly jumping ship and trying one of your competitors websites instead?

What can you do to make your website more mobile device friendly? Contact your website designer and tell them that you want them to create a mobile friendly version of your website. They will need to make some changes to the backend coding that will basically decipher which type of device a customer is accessing your website from so it will know whether to show your regular websit or the mobile friendly version.

Make sure you mimimize the information on your mobile friendly website. You want to keep the content simple and bulleted. Only put the most pertinent information goes on this version since the space is very limited. Also, make sure your phone number and address show prominently. Consider this: most people access your website on a mobile device when they are on the go and typically when they desperately need your services - make sure they can easily access your contact information and know exactly what you do. Oh, and did I mention that Google loves websites that also have a mobile friendly version.
