If you thought social media giant Facebook would allow Groupon and LivingSocial to have all the fun in the deals market space you'd be dead wrong. While Facebook initially launched its deals page back in November 2010, they have just expanded their market to include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K.
Considering the success of both Grouponand LivingSocial in the deals market space it comes as no surprise that Facebook would want to hop on the deals train as well. According to Facebook's blog, they "launched Places to let you share where you are with your friends and see who's nearby. Now with Deals, you can also see what offers are nearby and share those deals with your friends."
Get Deals Where You Are
Now you can find local deals on a map, just as you would using Facebook's official iPhone or Android apps or by accessing touch.facebook.com on your mobile phone. Unfortunately, it appears that these deals may only be available on iPhones, Android phones or Windows 7 Phones. So much for those of us still using Blackberry phones.
Deals for Every Occasion
If you're lucky enough to have a phone that supports the Facebook Deals page, you're able to get a wide-range of deal opportunities. From individual deals to loyalty and charity deals, Facebook definitely offers a wide range of discounts, free items and gifts to good causes.
Business Owner Opportunities
So as a consumer, of course we love Facebook Deals but how does it benefit you as a business owner?
Here's how Facebook Deals can help your business:
- Helps you engage with your customers
- Allows you to reward loyal customers with discounts and special offers to help keep them loyal to your business
- Build valuable relationships with this influential audience
- Drive more traffic to your business
- Social distribution
- Naturally generated "word-of-mouth" marketing
- Provides potential customers who are nearby a reason to check out your business
Emily White, Facebook's Director of Local, told the Wall Street Journal that since Facebook Deals launched in the U.S. in November 2010, "millions" of people have used the service and more than 50% of the merchants have elected to renew their offers. (Mashable.com - Lauren Indvik)

But how does it naturally generate "word-of-mouth" marketing?
Most Facebook users have an average of 130 friends online. So when I check in to your business through Facebook and you're offering a deal, all of my 200+ friends now have the opportunity to hear about your business and your deal through the naturally generated word-of-mouth marketing generated by Facebook's newsfeed. Plus, my friend's are going to be more inclined now to use your services because they value my opinion of your business more than any type of advertising you could create. Talk about a great return on investment!
