How are you being judged based on your website?

And based solely upon the statistic given above, there is no doubt that web sites play a major role in determining whether someone does business with your company or not.

Types of Web Designers?

There really is not set definition on the different types of web designers, programmers, etc... so I'm going to borrow Karen Greenstreet's definition of web designer types because I think she is dead-on.

  • Website Designer - helps you to determine the page layout, graphics, text location and colors of your site, as well as the navigation and how pages will cross-link to one another. He may also do the actual computer programming and graphic art work for the site, or may hire out that work to a programming specialist. A Website Designer is the project manager for your site design.
  • Website Programmer - takes the design from the Designer and creates the code to make the site run. She is also responsible for all the technical stuff that happens behind-the-scenes to make sure the site works properly for your visitors.
  • Graphic Designer - creates the graphics for the site, including page layout, colors, etc. Think of this person as the "visual artist" for your site.
  • Internet Marketing Consultant - helps you to determine how your website fits into your overall marketing strategy, and how to get more traffic and sales from your website. (this would be Dawn and Leslie by the way)

"Great, now which one do I need," you may be thinking. Ideally, you want all of these types to assist you in your website design and I'll explain why.

If you just hire a web designer you may get a site that has a great layout and is very user friendly but perhaps lacking that aesthetic appeal that will really capture a visitors attention. If you hire just a website programmer, your backend coding may be flawless but you could end up with a color scheme and design that lacks appeal. And if you hire a graphic designer, you may get a visually appealing site that is extremely hard to navigate and immediately turns consumers away.

How much business do you really think you'll get with a website like the one above?

Five years ago, your business simply needed a website but as consumers rely more and more on the Internet to make purchasing decisions, your website and overall web presence really need to make the right impression. It can mean the difference between simply surviving and dominating within your market or even being able to expand into new markets.

When hiring someone or a company to design your website make sure you are investing your money wisely because in today's age even my computer illiterate grandfather could claim to be a website designer. You don't really need much with all the easy-to-use web design tools out there. And just because you create it doesn't mean the business will come.

You need to make sure you have a myriad of web design experts on your side which incudes one that knows how to program the code, one who is an expert in usability and navigation, one who knows what visually appeals to your consumer and one that knows how to create a conversion friendly website that blends with your overall marketing goals.

Your website is NOT a financial burden unless you cause it to be. If you hire the right web design professionals to create your website you could see a huge return on your investment. I believe many business owners have flawed perceptions of the importance of a website because they were burned in the past. Do your due diligence. At the end of the day, it's your responsibility to hire the right web design professionals to help you buid a website that is a financial promiseland.
